Artwork File Types
Vector files and Raster files are two generic types of file format. Most people can produce a Raster file but a Vector file is normally produced by a graphic designer. In simple terms wew call a Vector file a 'join-the-dots' image because this is what every element appears to consist of on the screen when highlighted with the mouse.

Vector Files .EPS, .AI, .PS
Vector type files such as .EPS, .AI and .PS, are the best file type to print messages and logos onto your items because they are easily scalable and mirror the originator's file. Vector files are made up of mathematically drawn vectors. The words you type and see in your favorite word processor are drawn with vectors. When you increase the font size there is no pixelation on the screen is there ?
The most readable Vector file is a .EPS type. EPS stands for Encapsulated PostScript. When saving a file as an .EPS always take the option to make it editable and/or save the image with the fonts inside the file if possible.
Making the file editable means that those areas capable of being edited can be. When you save the fonts inside the files this is the same as saving the fonts as curves. This allows anyone on another PC with a program that can read .EPS files, to open your file and see exactly what you saw when you saved it. All the colours, layout and fonts match. Saving the fonts as curves means that they become Vectors and are mathematically drawn. If you do not save the fonts as curves you need to make sure that the person who will open the file has the same fonts on their PC as you do. Otherwise they will see a different type face.
Raster Files .PSD. PPD
The alternative to a Vector file is a Raster file. Raster artwork is made up of coloured pixels that together make the image such as digital photographs. Scaling up raster files causes pixelation. Common raster files extensions are: .PSD, .PDD,.JPG, .JPEG,.TIF, .BMP, .GIF and .PNG.

Windows and Apple Mac File Compatibility
Most commercial operations and individual users outside of the advertising and printing industry operate Windows PCs. Most printers and design studios however run Apple Mac systems. Therefore there can be conversion issues when files are transferred between the two systems. There can also be issues opening file formats between programs especially where older fonts are used. Redbows operates both operating systems and can help with any artwork issues you may have.
