Using hand sanitiser regularly (with an alcohol content of at least 60%) is recommended by the World Health Organization. Soap and running water may be the most effective way to remove chemicals and germs – the scrubbing creates friction that helps lift dirt, grease and bacteria. It takes at least 20 seconds to disinfect your hands completely, (remember to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice as you scrub, and if you want to be extra thorough, don’t forget the hip-hip hooray!), but it’s handy to have a hand wash in your bag or in the car if you can’t get to a sink.
