Why We Chew Gum

Chewing gum is a worldwide product whose popularity grew out of North America during the second world war by American GIs. Today, chewing any sort of gum has become associated with health and general wellness thanks to dental and food industry research. Many dental associations agree that gum is good and especially those that use a sugar-free mixture. One of the distinct advantages of chewing gum is that the practice stimulates the flow of saliva and this helps with overall oral hygiene and helps to clear food debris from around the team. Cited benefits often include cleaning, plaque reduction, reduced or prevented tooth decay, gum protection and even enamel strengthening, for more information see: https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/health-news/health-benefits-of-chewing-gum-5519791.html

The actual practice of chewing any sort of gum or gum-substitute dates back thousands of years. Almost every nation and civilisation had their own natural resources and adopted some form of the practice. Some of these substances are still in use today. The Ancient Greeks chewed on mastic tree barks, the Chinese on Ginseng plat roots, native Americans on sugar pine and the earliest settlers in America on tobacco leaves.

The modern chewing gum we know today is very different from the types that appeared in the mid-1800s. It was in 1848 that the first commercially available chewing gum was developed and sold by John B Curtis. This used gum from the Spruce tree and was marketed as the State of Maine Pure Spruce Gum. A couple of years later in 1850 paraffin wax-based gum was introduced but this was bland in its taste and the chewer often had to use a plate of sugar to dump the gum into during chewing.

Over the years chewing gum was evolved further to use various materials to give the gum its elasticity and reduce manufacturing costs. Today most modern gums are made from a synthetic rubber material known as polyisobutylene. Flavours are added to the mixture including sweeteners such as Dextrose to provide a sugar free variant.

Marketing Uses

What we like most about branded chewing gums is their advertising potential. The packaging provides a large print area onto which to place your logo and imprint. Packs or packets of gums like these are a great giveaway at exhibitions and seminars or in a general workplace or office environment.

The gums we supply have minimum order quantities and the higher the quantity ordered the lower the unit price. Chewing gum is a very stable product. It typically has non-reactive ingredients and a low moisture content. This gives this type of confectionery a longer shelf life in some countries there is no need for expiration date labelling. However, if you don’t use all your gums in one go we suggest that you only store them for 6-12 months at most and make sure that the storage is in line with the recommendations for food and confectionery products like these, in terms of temperature, humidity and sunlight.
