What are Earplugs?

Earplugs are made from foam in the form of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or polyurethane (PU) which is often referred to as memory foam or silicone. Earplugs when taken from a fresh a packet or container should be rolled and compressed and then put into an ear canal where they expand to mould into the canal to reduce the amount of surrounding or local noise from entering the ear canal.

When were Earplugs Invented?

It may be surprising, but earplug usage can be traced back to the Greeks and were mentioned in the Odyssey take. In this Circe, warns the Odyssey’s crew about the Sirens bewitching song that makes sailors crash their boats ashore and perish and advises them to make earplugs from beeswax. Jumping forward to 1962 and the first silicone ear plugs were invested.

Earplug Uses

We can use earplugs in promotional campaigns and they are favourite for travel related programs. Some airlines offer them on long-haul flights as part of their welcome packs. Earplugs can also have other uses than travelling.

Swimming

Some types of earplug are suitable for swimming, water polos and other water sports including surfing, wind surfing, kite surfing and water skiing. They prevent water from entering the ear canal. For some people water in the ear can be a real issue leading to a loss of hearing and infection. Exostosis is a medical condition and is commonly known as ‘Swimmer’s Ear’.

Health and Safety

In terms of health & safety there are four types of earplug hearing protection and these include:

  • Flanged earplugs which are rolled into a ball and moulded to fit over the external ear canal entrance.
  • Custom moulded earplugs which-are-made to measure. These may be used by racing drivers, other extreme sportspeople or people needing a custom moulded design.
