A Brief History of Bookmarks
Bookmarks have been used since around the sixteenth century. They were often attached to the books they were being used within and were often made from ribbon or woven silk . It wasn’t until the 1800s that bookmarks began to be used as a separate item. They were made from stiff paper and card which could be printed with a pattern and some became collectable items. Original terms were bookmarkers or markers which over time were shortened to bookmarks as a collective description. During the 20th century bookmarks became more of a promotional and advertising item were often used by publishers and today are used widely for similar purposes.
Even with the widespread use of electronic book readers, many people still use printed books whether learning to read, studying a particular subject or just reading for pleasure. They remain a very popular advertising and promotional giveaway as they have a fairly low-unit price, are very functional as a giveaway and provide a large print area with a range of printing techniques including screen printing, engraving, embossing and foil-leaf printing.
We have supplied thousands of promotional bookmarks over the years to clients in the education sector, charities, not-for-profit, public sector and commercial markets. They are a super giveaway and with the right artwork can appeal to a very wide range of users. If you send us your logo we can generate a virtual visual to show you how this could look on any of the bookmarks we supply. If you need a custom or bespoke product design we also provide this as a fully managed service.
